In this #careerstory we dive into the trajectory of the Merrymaker Sisters and find out why finding your bliss, your passion and your dream is the most important thing YOU CAN DO!
We love these girls, and without a doubt you will too!
Hi Ladies, can you tell us where you grew up and how the experience shaped the babes you are, and the career that you are in today?
We both grew up in Canberra, Australia. It was an amazing city to grow up in, safe and love filled. It inspired us to want to explore the world!
Where did you go to High School and how was that experience for you guys?
We both went to high school at Caroline Chisholm High, in Canberra. It was a public school, and we can’t say that we loved it all too much. Carla was bullied (Read more about this HERE) and Emma was so afraid of bullying that she stayed inside her shell and was never really herself. However, we both look back at these years and can understand that they played a big role in the people we are today and what we are doing now in our career and and our mindset.
Did your high school play an important role in helping you choose your further education and future career?
Not really! Carla wanted to be an actress and Emma never really knew what she wanted to do. All we knew is that we wanted to do something EPIC and we always spoke about doing things together and maybe even running a business together. We even started a jewellery making business back in high school together!
Did you complete any internships or work experience placements while you were in high school? Tell us about that experience.
We both volunteered for EVERY opportunity that came up. Nothing beats hands on experience. If a work experience opportunity or a volunteer position pops up, and you’re free and interested in learning more, we say go for it! Our internships ranged from event management/admin, PR, banquets and teaching.
Did you ladies go to College, University, Tafe or another equivalent? Take us through the courses that you studied and why you chose them?
Carla studied an Advanced Diploma and Degree in Public Relations, Emma studied Events Management and is only one subject away from graduating her Degree in Advertising. She’s has been one subject away for years now… will it even happen? Who knows!
How did you get into the job that you are in now?
One day we googled ‘how to start a blog’, and we did! The rest is history! We created our jobs and we wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. We’re not sure you can call it a job though, we enjoy it so much.
What is the hardest part of your current job?
The hardest part is focus. It always has been for both of us. We’re big ideas people and we get super excited at well, everything. So when it’s time to knuckle down, focus and finish a project sometimes we get side tracked with new ideas.
It’s not a bad thing, but it’s a hard one to manage. We get through it by using awesome project management tools like Trello. Check it out, it’s awesome for managing projects, tasks everything.
What does a day a typical business day look like for The Merrymaker Sisters?
Every day at The Merrymaker Sisters is really different. There is a bit of travel involved with merrymakers which is always fun, but a general day at home in the Gold Coast will involve lots of writing, recipe development, online product and content creation, photography, editing, creating newsletters, designing social media images, meetings, hiking, beach walks, coffee, yoga, Pilates, meditation and just having a whole lot of fun!
Who has been your hero, mentor or greatest inspiration growing up and why?
Definitely our parents. They are the kindest most generous people we have ever met. Growing up around these traits, taught us to be kind and giving. we believe that kindness and generosity go a long way in business and life.
If there is one thing (ok two things) that you should aim to be in life and business, they should be to be kind and generous. No one ever regrets being kind or generous.
What advice would you give girls who are interested in your career of following in your footsteps?
If you have an inkling, a little teeny burst of inspiration or fire in your belly about something, follow that.
The feeling is not there for nothing and you owe it to yourself and the world to explore whatever it might be. All you need to do is take one small step after small step. The difference between people who achieve their dreams and people who don’t is that they DO. They just keep doing. Be a doer!
Who do The Merrymaker Sisters turn to constantly for inspiration?
