Owner + Director / Bali Body
For Owner and Director, Laura Oosterloo, life is literally a beach. When she’s not developing cult worth body products, shooting bronzed, stunning models on the beach, or managing distribution, pr and logistics, you can find Laura and her Bali Body Co-Founder, (now husband) chasing the sun.
Let’s talk Bali Body for a minute, shall we?
Regarded as Australia’s leading natural tanning & skincare range, Bali Body was born three years ago in Canggu Bali, but despite these origins, all products are made locally in Australia. With over 1.1 Million Instagram followers, it’s fair to say that this e-comm business has cracked the cult status code. Not surprisingly, Laura is as effortless, bronzed and cool as the women in her campaigns. Growing up in the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Laura has always lived by the water. In her own words:
“I won’t live anywhere but bayside to this day. I just love waking up and walking along the beach and smelling the salty sea breeze.”
In today’s #careerstory we take a trip down memory lane, we touch on her work experience at a local Police Station, her role within the finance sector, and her motivation for throwing caution to the wind and starting her own business.
This interview will stoke your entrepreneurial fire, but most of all it will motivate you to JUST. GO. FOR. IT!
The time is now, let’s dive in.
Hey Laura, Welcome to The Cool Career, so so so pumped to have you stop by. Can you tell us where you grew up and how your experience shaped the person you are and the career that you are in today?
I grow up on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. I can 100% say, the beachside lifestyle has been installed in me. I won’t live anywhere but bayside to this day. I just love waking up and walking along the beach and smelling the salty sea breeze.
Yep, I agree with you. There is something magical about the water. So, where did you go to High School and how was that experience for you?
I went to Padua College, in Mornington. I loved my high school years, I was very lucky to have an amazing schooling experience and a great friendship group, to this day, whom I still see on a regular basis and consider some of my best friends.
Did your high school play an important role in helping you choose your further education and future career?
To be 100% honest, not really.
I do think that High School gave me the confidence to know whatever I do, I will do it with passion. My time there also taught me to never give up.
Did you complete any internships or work experience placements in high school? Tell us about that experience.
I did, at the local police station, and a law firm in the city, I always wanted to be a lawyer through school, complete opposite career to what I am doing now, ha!
Ha! How funny, from Police Station to beauty products, now that’s a story. Tell us about your career journey so far. Who you have worked for, and explain any highlights.
I worked in the insurance industry for 9 and a half years.
I loved my job, but knew deep down, there was something else for me. Owning my own business with my partner (husband now) was always a dream, and now we get to do what we love every day.
It’s crazy how things just just change… like that. So how did Bali Body come to be?
Bali Body came to life in Canggu, Bali, where my husband and I were living at the time.
We wanted to create a natural tanning oil that can be used on sensitive skin. So, we sourced some high-quality natural oils and started playing with formulas. From there, we created our first product (Tanning & Body Oil) and created the brand identity.
We started gifting bloggers immediately to build brand awareness, then we moved back to Melbourne and locked in suppliers, and launched Bali Body with an online-only business model via our website.
All our products are 100% Australian made, Bali was purely the source of inspiration for the brand.
Our first product was received really well, which was really exciting at the time, and with a lot of hard work and sacrifice over the last three years, we have built a brand that we are extremely proud of.
What is the hardest part of owning your own business?
Having a work-life balance, I tend to work A LOT!
What does a day a typical business day look like for you at Bali Body?
After taking the dog for a walk at 6AM, checking insta, emails, and all social accounts, we head into the office around 745am.
From there I would review my day, start on emails, our staff arrive not long after.
Then I debrief myself for the day ahead and go to meetings, normal for product development, website, SEO, PR, etc.
My day is always back to back. I always leave the office around 5.
One thing having your own business people need to understand, you never fully switch off, I guess that is the beauty of loving what you do.
Who has been your hero, or greatest inspiration growing up and why?
Sounds cliche, but my mum, she is a wonder woman and someone who I aspire to be like.
She devoted her life to nursing and caring for other people. Is beyond caring, thoughtful and selfless to me, my husband, our family and everyone she knows or doesn’t know.
After tragically losing my father in a motorbike accident 13 years ago, she took on two roles as a parent and amazed everyone with her strength.
Your mum sounds like an incredible woman. What a great role model. Let’s finish up with a piece of advice would you give girls who are interested in your career?
Be prepared to work hard, accept failure and be resilient. Stay original and also find a point of difference.
